AMD’s 16-Core Ryzen Whitehaven CPUs spotted – 3.6GHz Clock, Quad Channel DDR4 & S3 socket
Two new 16-core Ryzen “Whitehaven” CPUs have leaked on the web. Both enthusiast chips are built on AMD’s new X399 platform and include support for quad-channel DDR4 memory.
The first enthusiast Ryzen CPU was spotted a few weeks back, and today two additional chips have surfaced courtesy of VideoCardz. The new Ryzen engineering samples are designated the 2D3101A8UGAF4_36/31_N and 1D3101A8UGAF3_36/31_N device IDs. They both feature up to 16 cores and 32 threads, with clock speeds of 3.0GHz base and 3.6GHz boost.
The new Ryzen processor series will come in a variety of core configurations, with 16C/32T being the maximum. A 12-core SKU already exists, but the company is rumored to be working on configurations with 10 and 14 cores as well, though we haven’t seen any such engineering samples yet.
CPU ID | Base Clock | Boost Clock | Cores | Threads | Platform |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
2D3101A8UGAF4_36/31_N | 3100 | 3600 | 16 | 32 | AMD Whitehaven |

AMD’s enthusiast Ryzen family won’t be compatible with AM4, but a new socket which is internally codenamed S3. This high-end desktop (HEDT) platform is going to be LGA, rather than PGA, meaning the pins will be on the socket unlike the current Ryzen lineup which has them on the CPUs.
In addition to this, the Zen based X399 platform will support quad-channel DDR4 memory, as well as more PCIe lanes and more storage compared to AM4. It will compete directly with Intel’s upcoming X299 platform featuring a 12-core Skylake-X CPU which was spotted last month.
The 16-core Ryzen Whitehaven will have an edge over Skylake X in a way it offers more cores and L3 cache. Not only this but AMD’s Zen architecture also offers a value proposition of perf per dollar. Intel will need to launch their 12-core rival with a price cut for maximum effect otherwise AMD is well on its way to displacing it from the performance throne.

AMD’s 16-core Ryzen along with other enthusiast CPUs will reportedly be showcased at Computex 2017 which runs from May 30th to June 3rd.
