Intel’s Core i7-7700K Beats the new 6 Core i7-7800X in Gaming Benchmarks

Intel Core i7-7800X Game benchmarks vs Core i7-7700K

The Core i7-7800X benchmarks have emerged online which show the new Core X chip performs slower than an i7-7700K in gaming tasks, even when overclocked to 4.7GHz.

At Computex 2017, Intel announced its Core X-series of high-end desktop processors. The lineup scales from models with 4-cores all the way up to an 18-core i9 chip. The company will first launch chips with lower core count based on their Skylake X architecture.

The upcoming Skylake X chips include the Core i7-7800X which features six cores and 12 threads. Our friend Steven Walton over at TechSpot has managed to get hold of 7800X and chose to benchmark it against its little Kaby Lake sibling, the Core i7-7700K.

As it turns out, the quad-core chip soundly beats the new Skylake-X offering in virtually all gaming tasks.

Of course, the Core i7-7700K offers higher clock speeds than the i7-7800X does: 4.2 vs 3.5 GHz base clock, and 4.5 vs 4.0 GHz boost clock. As a general performance rule, frequency usually trumps core count when it comes to gaming on processors with more than four cores.

The same applies here and 7700K becomes a more attractive proposition than the 7800X in both pure FPS terms, as well as power consumption.

I get the Core i7-7800X isn’t a gaming-focused CPU, but what’s surprising is that its performance continues to be lacking even when it is clocked higher than the 7700K. As seen in the benchmarks above, a Core i7-7800X overclocked to 4.7GHz is up to 5% slower than the stock 7700K.

Not only this but the 7800X consumes around 41% higher idle power, and 23% higher gaming power to deliver these lower framerates.

Intel Core i7-7800X is priced at $390, and will be available before the end of the month. The chip will launch along with the 10-core i9-7900X and 8-core i7-7820X.
