Intel Core i9 benchmarks: 12 & 10-core Skylake X performance overview
The first Intel Core i9 benchmarks have surfaced on the web. According to the leaker, the benchmarks are for two high-end CPUs in the lineup giving us a glimpse of their performance.
The alleged specifications of Intel’s upcoming HEDT (high-end desktop) line of processors leaked out last week. Featuring a Core i9 branding, the chips are part of Skylake X and Kaby Lake X family and will target the multi-tasking geared desktop PCs.
Core i9 benchmarks Leaked – i9-7920X is a Massive Multi-Tasking Processor
Hardware.info was the first to spot two entries of alleged Core i9 Skylake X CPUs over at UserBenchmark. The CPUs feature 12 and 10 cores, hinting they could be alleged engineering samples of Core i9 7920X and i9 7900X respectively.
According to the previous leak, the Core i9 7920X is a 12-core, 24-thread chip that will run at a boost clock speed of over 4GHz. It features 16.5 MB of L3 cache with support for 44 PCIe Gen 3.0 lanes. The chip will ship with a TDP rating of 160W.
The Intel Core i9-7900X has 10 cores and 20 thread. It operates at 3.3GHz base and 4.3GHz boost which can further be boosted up to 4.5GHz with Intel Turbo 3.0. The total cache on the chip is 13.75 MB (L3) with same PCIe lanes and TDP as the i9 7920X.

Looking at the leaked Core i9 benchmarks, you can see that the i9 7920X is a real monster, with a multi-core score of 1760. It outperforms the current Intel HEDT flagship Core i7 6950X in all single, quad and multi-core benchmarks, while simply crushes AMD’s Ryzen 7 1800X.
The deca-core i9 7900X performs less than the Core i7 6950X @ 3.5GHz. The Ryzen 1800X also manages to beat the 7900X, but only in single core performance.
The lower scores could be explained from the benchmark data which shows that both Skylake X chips are not yet operating at their finals specs and often lower clocks.
The Core i9 7900X runs at a base clock of 3.1GHz, 0.2GHz short of what’s the official specs. The Core i9 7920X can also be seen operating at only 2.9GHz base and 3.25GHz boost clock speeds.
So you can imagine how scary good these Core i9 beasts would be when they will be featuring the full 4.5GHz clocks.

Intel Skylake-X CPUs will compete directly with AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 9 Threadripper lineup build on their brand new X399 platform. More specifically, Intel’s 12-core parts will take on AMD’s Ryzen Whitehaven platform which comprises of CPUs with up to 16 cores.
Based on AMD’s modified Naples-based server SP3 socket, the Whitehaven platform not only offers more cores and threads compared to its Intel’s counterpart, but also more I/O, storage and L3 cache. Intel will need to launch their HEDT Core i9 chips with a price cut for maximum effect.
