AMD Ryzen 7 Photoshop Performance: Slower Than Intel Core i7 7700K
Photoshop seems to run better on less cores with high clock speeds. The Ryzen 7 Photoshop performance results show that AMD’s new 8-core, 16-thread CPUs are slower compared to Intel’s quad-core i7 7700K.
We know that AMD Ryzen is suffering from early BIOS issues that are affecting its performance, especially in 1080p gaming. In addition to this, there’s another bug found in the Windows 10 scheduler recently, that makes it unable to correctly identify Ryzen’s principal core threads from virtual SMT threads.
As a result, Windows 10 doesn’t give any preferential prioritization of assigning tasks to a principal core thread, and a large percentage of them do end up getting scheduled for a virtual SMT thread. This, of course, degrades the overall CPU performance.
Despite these issues, the new Ryzen processors deliver an impressive multi-threaded performance when it comes to multimedia and encoding workloads. However, a new test shows that AMD’s Ryzen 7 CPUs aren’t all that great for Photoshop.

Ryzen 7 Photoshop Performance Compared Against Core i7 7700K
Puget Systems tested the new Ryzen 7 1800X and 1700X in Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 against Intel’s CPUs, including the Core i7 7700K, i7 6850K and i7 6900K. They tested three Photoshop actions: General, Photomerge and HDR Creation.
The results show that Intel’s quad-core Core i7 7700K is faster than both of AMD’s 8-core Ryzen chips. Apparently, Photoshop doesn’t take full advantage of multiple CPU cores.
However, even if we compare AMD’s new solutions to Intel’s six and eight core CPUs, they lag behind in photomerge and HDR photo creation. For the latter, Intel’s 6-8 core chips outperform the Ryzen 7 1700X by around 25-40% and the 1800X by 10-20%.
The Core i7 7700K comes out to be the best CPU available for Photoshop, which is both cheaper and significantly faster. In general tasks and photomerge, the flagship Kaby Lake chip is around 23% faster than Ryzen on average. The 1800X does well when creating HDR photos, but it still can’t reach the performance levels of the i7 7700K for that task.
Once again, I would like to mention that Windows 10 scheduler bug could have negatively affected the Ryzen 7 Photoshop performance. Puget Systems will test the performance of Ryzen processors again in May. AMD is actively working with Microsoft and board makers right now, and hopefully, it will manage to fix the existing issues by then.
