Slide showing 12-Core Ryzen 7 2800X @ 5.1GHz is Fake

AMD X399 16-core Ryzen CPU rumored

For the past couple of days, a slide has been making rounds on the Internet, allegedly showing the second generation Ryzen 7 series CPUs. The lineup includes the Ryzen 7 2800X, 2800 and 2700, with specifications, pricing and timeline so impressive that they had many PC enthusiaists excited. Unfortunately, the slide is fake.

The AMD slide in question appeared in the background in a video posted on YouTube by KitGuru. It shows three new Ryzen Gen 2 processors, all featuring more cores and faster clock speeds compared to AMD’s existing Ryzen 7 series. Here’s a look at the three Ryzen 7 2000 series CPUs:

  • Ryzen 7 2800X: 12 cores / 24 threads running at 4.6GHz to 5.1GHz
  • Ryzen 7 2800: 12 cores / 24 threads running at 4.4GHz to 4.9GHz
  • Ryzen 7 2700: 12 cores / 24 threads running a 4.0GHz to 4.5GHz

According to the leaked deck, the new CPUs are planned for February 1, but what’s more exciting about the launch is AMD’s aggressive pricing: the flasghip Ryzen 7 2800X will be priced at $449, R7 2800 at $399, and R7 2700 at $329.

The leak spread like wildfire on the tech news media, but sadly, no one included any references to the original source. As it appears, the slide made its through the web via the imageboard site 4chan where it was posted to create an Internet hoax.

Taking a closer look, it becomes obvious that the font for some of the characters displayed in the slide is different from what AMD uses in its official press deck, indicated the image has been photoshopped.

Further, the same source claims that the Ryzen 2000 series will be built using the 7nm process which is also known to be false. AMD has already confirmed their next-gen Ryzen and Vega parts will be built on GlobalFoundries’ 12LP FinFET.

It’s also worth repeating that the new Ryzen CPUs, codenamed Pinnacle Ridge, will not be based on the Zen 2 architecture, but rather use tweaked Zen cores. You can read more about next-gen Ryzen CPUs here.
