Radeon RX 6000 + Ryzen 5000: The Perfect Gaming Solution with Smart Access Memory?

AMD Smart Access Memory ON

The Radeon RX 6000 series should be the perfect gaming platform in conjunction with a Ryzen 5000 processor. Thanks to Smart Access Memory, a Zen 3 processor can access the entire GDDR6 memory of a Radeon RX 6900 XT, RX 6800 XT and Radeon RX 6800. According to AMD, the performance increase in select games is up to eleven percent.

AMD has now presented the performance-increasing Smart Access Memory on its website . In a nutshell, it says there that conventional Windows PCs only allow the CPU to access the memory of the graphics card to a limited extent at the same time. Frank Azor, co-founder of Alienware, spoke of 256 MB during the presentation of the Radeon RX 6000 series.

This limit is now to be lifted by means of Smart Access Memory – completely.

There is only one catch: the Raden RX 6900 XT, Radeon 6800 XT and Radeon RX 6800 only support the feature in conjunction with a Ryzen 5000 processor and a motherboard with a 500 I / O hub. If you bring all three together, a kind of ecosystem of its own arises with the Smart Access Memory in picture.

In return, overhead-reducing optimizations seem to be possible, as is otherwise only known from closed platforms such as Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X. AMD expects “real world performance gains” of up to eleven percent.

5-11% performance gains with Smart Access Memory

The max eleven percent applies to Forza Horizon 4 at 4K and ultra details. Gears 5 and Hitman 2 are expected to increase by six percentage points with the same settings, and Borderlands 3 and Wolfenstein: Young Blood by five percentage points each.

However, AMD doesn’t mention the exact FPS values here. It also remains to be seen whether these titles are representative of the broad set of games, or rather for the select ones.

In addition to the Smart Access Memory, AMD has also introduced the Infinity Cache and a simple 1-click overclocking option called Rage Mode. These features are all set to debut with the release of the Radeon RX 6000-series on November 18, 2020.
