PS5 Graphics: Next-Gen Console will offer Photorealistic visuals, Says Dev

Sony PS5 dev kit leak

Recently, there’s been a lot of buzz around the PS5 graphics and the power levels that the next generation console will be able to achieve. Even Jamie Fisher, Producer at Climax Studios for Surf World Series, couldn’t resist talking about it.

During an interview with GamingBolt, Fisher said Photorealism is an inevitability. The industry is focused on increasing the power of the gaming hardware, and we’ll likely see the new PlayStation 5 delivering a realistic graphical fidelity.

When asked if the tech upgrade will be big enough for the PS5 graphics to be photorealistic, Fisher said:

I’m not so fussed about what’s in the box, I’m more interested in the games. So my wish for the next hardware iterations is just that people keep making good stuff for them.

Photorealism is an inevitability. If we keep increasing the power of our gaming hardware, which is something we 100% will continue to do, we’ll eventually reach a level where the visuals of a game are capable of photorealism; whether it’s the next generation or not.

But, for me, it’s not something that I’m all that drawn to. I would personally be more drawn to a game with a well-crafted or interesting or cohesive aesthetic over one that looked real.

For the last couple of years, we have been expecting more realistic graphics with every single generation of console, or any new game engine that becomes available in the market. We’re also seeing a continuous development of new tools that allow better visuals and other related stuff, but still, I don’t think we’re there yet with many games.

That being said, the next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles could actually bring something new to the table. That’s because once we’ve made the native 4K jump with the upcoming Xbox Scorpio, developers and game engine creators would be able to pull off pretty nice tricks out of it. They could make use of all kinds of graphical settings and effects that will make the game look more photorealistic.

In fact, it’s all about those finishing touches like better textures, ray tracing, improved quality shadows and lighting, as well as all sort of particle effects that make for more immersive and realistic looking graphics.

However, one thing that’s worth mentioning here is, although the photorealism is great, but that shouldn’t be achieved at the expense of other aspects of the game. I mean, at the end of the day, it’s not only about PS5 graphics, but there are other things too, such as gameplay, story and immersion with the game that really do matter.
