Intel’s 8th generation Core processors, code named Coffee Lake, are scheduled to arrive in the second half of this year. The new lineup will see the introduction of the company’s first 6-core mainstream CPUs that will counter AMD’s widely popular Ryzen 5 chips.

Recently, a Coffee Lake 6-core variant appeared in the SiSoft database showing the CPU will support up to 12 threads. The chip will run at a base clock of 3.1GHz and a boost clock of 4.2GHz, with a TDP rating of 81.2W.

The new 6C/12T Coffee Lake CPU will feature a memory frequency of 2700MHz (should be DDR4-2666 memory), L2 cache of 256KB per core and a total L3 cache of 12MB.

For comparison, the Coffee Lake 6-core, 6-thread CPU, which leaked earlier, features a clock speed of 3.5GHz, L2 cache of 256KB and L3 cache cut to 9MB.

As always, we’d advise you to take this information with a pinch of salt as there is nothing official yet.

Intel Coffee Lake to arrive as soon as August

According to a previous Intel roadmap, the first Coffee Lake chips will launch in August. These will come in the form Coffee Lake-S, including the 4-core and 6-core K-series desktop parts. The Coffee Lake chips will also bring Intel’s new Z370 chipset.

More Coffee Lake-S chips will follow in early 2018. These will include 2-, 4- and 6-core parts with TDP ratings of 35, 65 and 95 watts.

Intel Coffee Lake will be based on the same architecture as the current Kaby Lake chips, but will utilize a more refined 14nm++ FinFET process. This should boost clock speeds resulting in an overall better performance per watt compared to last-gen chips.

What do you think of Intel’s 6C/12T Coffee Lake CPU? Could it compete against AMD’s Ryzen 5 in the mainstream desktop market?
