Destiny 2 requires CPUs with SSSE3 instruction set, No patch for AMD Phenom II crashes

Destiny 2 - No patch for AMD Phenom II crashes

Destiny 2 launched on PC Tuesday, October 24. While the game has been greatly optimized for the platform, players on an AMD Phenom II CPU appear to be suffering from major crashing issues. According to Bungie, this is happening because the processors do not support SSSE3 instruction set extension.

Since the launch of the game, a lot of AMD Phenom II users have reported crashing when a character is being loaded. Bungie has stated to be aware of the issues and will work to fix the crash. But, the developer also noted that this particular AMD CPU falls below their stated minimum specs for Destiny 2, which include at least AMD FX-4320 or an Intel Core i3-3250.

AMD Phenom II suffers crashes in Destiny 2

Further, Bungie already has this written on its official Known Issues list: “Destiny 2 will not run on processors without Supplemental Streaming SIMD Extensions 3 (SSSE3).” Since the AMD Phenom II CPU doesn’t support this instruction set, a patch is obviously no longer in the plans.

For affected players, the problem came as a surprise because the beta, held from August 27 to 31, still ran smoothly on Phenom II.

The Supplemental Streaming SIMD Extensions 3 (SSSE3) was first introduced by Intel with the Core architecture in 2006. AMD adopted the instruction set in 2011 with their Bulldozer architecture for the FX processor family.

In addition to the incompatibility with CPUs without SSSE3, players have reported more technical problems with Destiny 2 on PC. These include issues with SLI, G-Sync, and HDR when not playing in the display’s native resolution.

The Destiny 2 client may also crash after using ALT+TAB when AMD Crossfire is enabled. A full list of reported problems and their suggested solutions by the developer is available on the Bungie forum.

In case you’re running Destiny 2 on an AMD RX 580 or RX Vega 56 GPU, you might want to consider upgrading to the latest Radeon ReLive 17.10.2 driver for a significant uplift in performance.
