Tested: Assassin’s Creed Origins requires a CPU with 8 Threads for Full Performance

Assassin's Creed Origins CPU performance

The PC version of Assassin’s Creed Origins has been significantly improved over its predecessor. The game boasts some pretty impressive graphics with a very extensive option menu. However, the graphics card and processor requirements appear to be higher than expected. Especially, you may require a CPU with more cores/threads if you want to play it at high preset.

Assassin’s Creed Origins CPU Benchmarks – 1920 × 1080

While four cores are usually sufficient for most games, Assassin’s Creed Origins scales even on six cores. Tests performed by ComputerBase.de show that Intel’s 6-core, 12-thread Core i7-8700K paired with an Asus GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Strix OC, delivers the best performance in the game.

Assassin's Creed Origins CPU benchmarks

The flagship Coffee Lake CPU is 19% faster than the quad-core i7-7700K in 1920 × 1080, and delivers 12% better frametimes. This is a much bigger difference between the two than we’ve observed in other games.

AMD hardware, however, doesn’t seem to perform well in Assassin’s Creed Origins. At 1080p, their flagship Ryzen 7 1800X featuring 8 cores and 16 threads is slower than the 8700K, but can keep up with the Kaby Lake chip.

CPUs with less than eight threads will struggle in the latest Assassin’s Creed game. The Core i5-7600K for instance, which still has four cores as the i7-7700K but doesn’t support hyper-threading, is a whopping 27% slower than its elder sibling. The chip just runs out of breadth when it comes to frametimes with 38% slower results.

As you will expect, Intel’s Pentium G4560 delivers even weaker performance. The CPU with two cores and four threads loses another 24% fps over the i5-7600K while frametimes are 29% worse. The result: the game is simply unplayable with the G4560 at 1080p High. There will be severe stuttering unless you decide to lock the framerate to 30 fps.

In conclusion, Assassin’s Creed Origins is one the few games that scale very well with more number of threads even on quad-core CPUs. You will require a chip with at least eight threads to achieve the full performance. But this applies only to max setting — the game should still run smooth at Low preset.
