Intel Core i3-8130U Kaby Lake-R Gets a Turbo Boost, Full Specs Leaked

Intel Core i3-8130U gets turbo boost

Reports are in that Intel is readying to launch a new Core i3-8130U, based on Kaby Lake Refresh, earlier this year. What’s interesting about this Core i3 mobility part is that it comes with a Turbo feature that will rise the clock speeds as high as 3.4GHz.

Intel Core i3-8130U Specs: 2 Cores, 4 Threads with up to 3.4GHz Boost Clock

Intel launched their 8th Gen Kaby Lake Refresh family for low-power notebooks back in June 2017. The lineup included two Core i7 and two Core i5 processors, all featuring four cores and eight threads with 15W TDP. Now the company is reportedly planning to add a Core i3 chip to its Kaby Lake-R family.

The new Core i3-8130U will have 2 cores and 4 threads clocked at 2.4GHz base, which can be boosted to 3.4GHz if temperature and power consumption allow it. Whether this applies only to single- or multi-core turbo remains unknown.

For comparison, the predecessor Core i3-7130U offered a base clock of 2.7GHz with no turbo boost. This means the base clock of the new Core i3 Kaby Lake-R is lower than its predecessor, but it’s still 700MHz or 26% faster thanks to the Turbo feature.

Further, the Core i3-8130U has got 4 MB L3 cache instead of 3 MB on 7130U. The graphics engine is also updated to UHD 620 to provide support for 4K content playback. The TDP is rated at 15 watts, which is typical for ULV chips.

Intel Kaby Lake Refresh is based on the same micro architecture as the 7th Gen processors, but uses the improved 14nm process for higher frequencies combined with better efficiency. The Core i3-8130U will be Intel’s next budget hit on the market that will be powering laptops which are best for performing day to day tasks and light gaming.

Intel is expected to launch the new i3 chip in early 2018, but we’re not sure if it will happen at the CES expo next week. We’ll be covering the event so you can rest assured to get an update once the word is out.
