AMD Ryzen 5 Raven Ridge APU Spotted – 3.6 GHz burst, Vega M Graphics & More

AMD shares price_Sep. 18

An upcoming 2-in-1 laptop from HP could be the first to implement AMD’s Ryzen 5 2500U Raven Ridge APU. The next-gen APU, which will be featuring AMD’s latest and greatest Vega graphics and Ryzen CPU cores on the same die, is expected to launch later this year.

Before we go ahead, I want to mention that this isn’t the first time we have heard of the Ryzen 5 2500U. The chip has seen multiple leaks, in fact, it was spotted in a Geekbench listing just last month. So we already know a lot about the Raven Ridge APU but there are a few interesting details revealed in the new leak.

AMD Ryzen 5 2500U Raven Ridge APU spotted in HP Envy x360 listing

According to the datasheet posted by HP, its Envy x360 laptop features a Ryzen 5 2500U that is a quad-core chip with eight threads, thus confirming that simultaneous multi-threading (SMT) will be enabled on Raven Ridge APUs.

The Ryzen 5 2500U is clocked at 2 GHz base and 3.6 GHz burst; the latter is just another name for Boost frequency on AMD mobility processors. The chip has 6 MB of cache on board. Being an APU, the package will also include an integrated Radeon Vega M Graphics that replaces GCN found on the older AMD products.

There are no more details on the GPU front itself, but if a previous AMD roadmap is to be believed, Raven Ridge will features a total of 11 Vega GPU cores, rounding up to 704 stream processors. This is a nice boost over 512 SPs on Bristol Ridge and should help improve the performance of iGPU on such chips.

First-ever Ryzen Laptop - Ryzen Mobile performance

We don’t expect performance to match a desktop Radeon RX Vega anyway. However, AMD previously said its Ryzen Mobile would offer 50% better CPU performance and 40% better GPU performance than its current generation APUs. If those claims are true, the Envy x360 and other Raven Ridge powered machines could offer up a decent performance in less demanding games.

Other HP Envy x360 specs include a 15.6-inch FHD IPS display, 8 GB of single-channel DDR4-2400 memory (support for up to 16 GB), and a 256 GB PCIe based NVMe M.2 storage. All of this comes in a 45Wh power package with claimed battery life at a little over 10 hours.
