AMD Raven Ridge Ryzen 5 2500U Benchmarked – Features 4 Zen Cores with Vega Graphics
AMD’s upcoming Raven Ridge APU has just popped up on Geekbench. The APU in question is the Ryzen 5 2500U, which features four Zen cores with Vega graphics.
Raven Ridge will be AMD’s first APU family to feature both Vega graphics and Ryzen CPU cores on the same die. The Ryzen 5 2500U packs a quad core CPU with eight threads confirming that simultaneous multi-threading (SMT) will be enabled on Raven Ridge APUs.
Moreover, the chip features AMD 1500 Graphics which are based on the latest Vega GPU architecture and should deliver a significant increase in performance over the GCN based APUs.
According to the Ryzen 5 2500U Geekbench, the APU manages to hit 3,561 points in the single-core and 9,421 points in the multi-core score. The chip was running at 2.0GHz clock speed.

When compared with AMD’s Bulldozer-based A12-9800, which also features four cores (but with SMT disabled) clocked at 3.8GHz, the Ryzen 5 2500U delivers 36% better single-core and 48% better multi-core performance.
The results are impressive considering the A12-9800 runs at almost double the frequency of the Ryzen APU. It seems that AMD has managed to achieve some decent IPC gains with Raven Ridge over their pevious generation iterations.
AMD has already stated that all SKUs under Raven Ridge will be branded as Ryzen chips. The naming scheme suggests that the CPU family will be known as the Ryzen 200 series. A previous AMD roadmap also hints at Raven Ridge APUs featuring enhanced Zen cores which could later make it to the Zen 2 in the Pinnacle Ridge family.
On the GPU front, Raven Ridge features a total of 11 Vega GPU cores for up to 704 stream processors. For reference, Bristol Ridge has 512 SPs on board. These small Vega cores should help improve the performance of integrated graphics on such chips.
AMD Raven Ridge is scheduled to launch in the second half of the year. You can expect these chips to be priced in the sub-$250 US range.
