Gaming RX Vega to feature More than 300W TDP?

AMD RX Vega custom models - Vega on display

AMD’s Vega GPU is one of the most anticipated hardware products of the year. The company has already revealed details of the first Vega based products, including the professional-targeted Radeon Vega FE and the Radeon Instinct MI25 GPU accelerator. However, we are still eagerly waiting for the launch of a gaming RX Vega graphics card.

The Radeon RX Vega is set to launch at SIGGRAPH 2017, which kicks off at the end of July. The new cards will feature the powerful Vega 10 GPU and HBM2 memory, but it seems that they will have a very high power draw.

As reported by VideoCardz, an MSI marketing director had the following to say at Dutch tech forums Tweakers.net (Google translated):

I’ve seen the specs of Vega RX. It needs a damn lot of power. We’re working on it, which is a start so launch is coming closer.

Gaming RX Vega - Power consumption

The statement from the MSI rep has appealed to our worst fears. Up until now, AMD has detailed three Vega 10 based cards and each features at least 300W TDP rating.

The AMD Radeon Instinct MI25 launched a couple of days ago, with a TDP of 300W. The Radeon Vega Frontier Edition will hit the market later this month in two flavors. The air cooled variant will have a TDP of 300W while the liquid cooled variant will be rated at 375W.

Previously, we saw teasers of the Radeon RX Vega running an AIO liquid cooled solution. Since it is going to be faster than the Vega FE, it is quite possible for the gaming RX Vega to feature a 375W TDP after all it will have to maintain higher clocks.

This sounds decent until you notice that Nvidia’s flagship GeForce GTX 1080 Ti has a 250W TDP. The stock Founders Edition features a 6+8 pin power connector configuration and it can boost way beyond its rated clock speeds.

The Radeon RX Vega will operate using dual 8 pin connectors and may require more power than the competition. Nevertheless we can expect some potent third party cooling solutions at launch as MSI is already “working on it.”
