AMD hints at working on RX Vega 56 and Vega 64 for Laptops

AMD RX Vega 64 pricing issue

AMD might not have revealed their plans about the future desktop products, but it seems like the company is readying Radeon RX Vega 56 and Vega 64 for laptops. According to AMD’s Scott Wasson, Vega 10 could go into mobile allowing the company to once again enter the high-end gaming notebook market.

No Radeon 600 Series Graphics Cards in 2018

AMD recently shared updates on their graphics architectures at CES 2018. The company announced a brand-new Radeon Vega Mobile chip alongside their long-term GPU roadmap, stretching all the way into 2020. Apart from these, no details were revealed about specific Radeon products coming in 2018.

RX Vega 56 and Vega 64 for laptops coming?

Based on their Radeon graphics roadmap, AMD plans to shrink the Vega architecture to 7nm. The customer sampling is scheduled to begin sometime in 2018, but it seems unlikely for the desktop parts to be available any time sooner.

The first products off the line will be Radeon Intinct family for machine learning applications shipping later this year. Gamers who want 7nm Radeon 600 series cards may need to wait a bit longer, probably until Q1 2019. The big product on 7nm, however, will be the Navi GPU coming sometime after.

We also have something exciting regarding the prospect of AMD’s high-end Vega 10 GPU making it to mobile market. Scott Wasson, Sr. Manager, Product Marketing at AMD, said in an interview with PCGH that the RX Vega 56 and Vega 64 for laptops is very much possible, hinting an AMD partner may already be working on such a notebook design.

“I can’t pre-announce products for our partners,” Wasson said. “It is possible to take a Vega 10 GPU and put it into a notebook. So we’ll have to see.”

AMD Radeon RX Vega Nano prototype

Vega 10 requires significant power and cooling, so putting it inside a notebook will not be as simple, but we’ve seen AMD tackling those challenges in the past with the Radeon R9 Nano. Indeed, we saw photos of a Vega Nano prototype last year at Capsaicin Siggraph, though the company hasn’t announced the product yet.

It’s possible that AMD produces a power optimized Vega 10 GPU this year that could then simultaneously go into a Vega Nano and RX Vega 56 and Vega 64 for laptops. But as Wasson said, we can only wait and see for now.
