AMD RX Vega 64 outperforms GTX 1080 Ti in Wolfenstein 2 benchmarks

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus is here and it’s one of the best games of 2017. But, what is its PC performance like? The benchmarks show that AMD Vega benefits from the Vulkan-based optimizations on Wolfenstein 2, offering the best performance even surpassing the fastest Nvidia GPU.

Wolfenstein 2 benchmarks: RX Vega 64 Leads the Pack

Wolfenstein 2 benchmarks come from the Polish website PurePC.pl. They used a test bench featuring a 4.8 GHz Intel Core i7-7700K, paired with 16GB G.Skill Trident Z memory clocked at 3200 MHz in quad-channel mode. The drivers used were the Radeon Crimson ReLive 17.10.3 or the GeForce 388.13 WHQL, both optimized for the game.

The game was tested at three resolutions: 1920×1080, 2560×1440 and 3840×2160. Below are the benchmark results:

Wolfenstein 2 benchmarks - 1440p
Wolfenstein 2 benchmarks - 4K

As is obvious from the benchmarks, Wolfenstein 2 favors AMD Radeon cards. We’ll come to that in a while, but first I want to bring your attention to another key aspect: the game requires a graphics card with at least 4GB of memory to run smoothly at high preset settings.

This is evident from the performance gap between the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB and 6GB models. Usually, the difference is only up to a few fps, but it’s quite noticeable here with the GTX 1060 6GB offering up to 40% faster performance than the cheaper model in 1920 x 1080.

The disparity between the GTX 1050 (2GB) and GTX 1050 Ti (4GB) on High, further confirms this fact. That said, the GeForce cards with 2GB memory are of course capable of providing 60 fps at Low preset.

The same is true for AMD Radeon GPUs, however as mentioned above, they perform better in The New Colossus compared to the rival GeForce cards.

The Radeon RX Vega 64 even outperforms Nvidia’s flagship GTX 1080 Ti by a significant margin in full HD. The RX 580 performs on par with the GTX 1070, and so does the R9 390 compared to the GTX 980 Ti.

The performance of Nvidia GeForce cards gets better as we move to higher resolutions. At 4K, the GTX 1080 Ti retakes the top spot, though it’s ahead of the Vega 64 by just 6 fps.

The superior Vega performance in Wolfenstein 2 comes down to the use of the Vulkan API. Developer MachineGames has already explained that the use of Vulkan has allowed them to “utilize the power of AMD’s VEGA graphics chips in ways that were not possible before, giving us fine grained control over the performance and feature set of the GPU without having to sacrifice artistic intent.”

Let’s keep in mind that Nvidia was initially worse at Vulkan-based DOOM also, but the performance increased with time. That may happen again, but AMD is not going to rest on its laurels as they have already announced further driver optimizations for Wolfenstein 2.
