Intel Core i7-8700K Benchmarks Leaked – Faster Than AMD’s 8 Core Ryzen 7 1700

Core i7-8700 vs 8700K: How fast is the non-K SKU?

Intel Core i7-8700K benchmarks have leaked out, indicating it’s going to be a beast of a gaming CPU. The Coffee Lake flagship is apparently faster than AMD Ryzen 7 1700 which has more cores and threads on board. Intel is, of course, bragging some exceptional IPC gains here.

Intel Core i7-8700K Coffee Lake Specs and Price

Intel’s Coffee Lake desktop chips are scheduled to launch in the fall. The lineup will see the introduction of the first 6-core mainstream CPUs from the company that are meant to counter AMD’s Ryzen processors featuring up to 8 cores.

The Core i7-8700K is the flagship Coffee Lake chip. It features 6 cores and 12 threads clocked at 3.8GHz base, 4.7GHz maximum Turbo and 4.3GHz all-core boost. The clock speeds indicate a much faster gaming performance compared to the current generation of processors.

Moreover, the chip is fully unlocked allowing for a greater overclocking potential. It packs 12 MB of L3 cache along with a GT2 tier iGPU. The TDP is rated at 95W. You can expect the i7-8700K to cost between $349 and $379.

The benchmarks show the Core i7-8700 performance compared against Intel’s current Kaby Lake flagship, the Core i7-7700K, Intel’s 6-core, 12-thread Core i7-7800X from the Core X series, and AMD’s 8-core, 16-thread Ryzen 7 1700. All CPUs were tested at their stock speeds.

Intel Core i7-8700K benchmarks - wPrime

The results are interesting. In wPrime benchmark, the Core i7-8700K manages to outperform every CPU in both single and multi-threaded scores. Similarly, it achieves the best multi-threading score in Fritz Chess, with single-threaded score only 14 points lower than the Core i7-7700K.

Moving to Core i7-8700K Cinebench, the chip is on par with Ryzen 7 1700 in multi-threaded test, while the single-core performance is similar to 7700K.

Overall, the Core i7-8700K performance numbers are impressive. If Intel manages to launch the chip at a price under $350, it could make a very compelling option for mainstream builders.

Intel 8th Gen desktop chips will be based on the same basic CPU and graphics architecture as Kaby Lake, but will use the updated 14nm++ process node. You will require a new 300 series motherboard to run the chips although the chipset is known to feature the same socket aka LGA 1151 (v2).

Furthermore, the next-gen platform will feature integrated USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps), along with support for DDR4-2666 MHz memory (native), and up to 24 PCI-E lanes. Other notable features include:

  • Intel Hyper-Threading Technology For 12 Way Multitasking
  • Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0
  • Intel Smart Cache Technology
  • Supports Intel Optane Memory
  • Supports Two-Channel DDR4
  • Thunderbolt 3 with DisplayPort 1.4
  • Intel UHD Graphics 630

Intel Coffee Lake launch is expected to take place in the first week of October. Do you think it will live up to the hype and challenge AMD’s disruptive Ryzen lineup?
