AMD Ryzen Threadripper Box Unveiled – No AIO Liquid Cooler Included?

AMD enters 3DMark Hall of Fame

AMD has officially revealed the retail box of its highly anticipated Ryzen Threadripper processors. The packaging is gorgeous, but as it appears, it’s not big enough to include a liquid cooler.

AMD CEO Lisa Su just showed off the nifty box for Ryzen Threadripper on her Twitter feed. The box is uniquely designed and looks unlike anything we’ve seen before. It is rounded cuboid in shape featuring a plastic window on the front. This window is engraved with minimal branding with the large Threadripper chip visible through it.

Lisa Su unveiling Ryzen Threadripper packaging

Previous rumors stated that AMD would bundle a closed-loop liquid cooler, or CLC, with its 180-watt Threadripper chip. While the Ryzen Threadripper package is larger than usual, there is still not enough room in there for a liquid cooling solution. In fact, don’t expect the Threadripper chips to equip any cooler at all.

Reviewers will likely get the first batch of brand-new Noctua TR4 coolers with their Threadripper samples. If you plan to buy a cooler, it seems that you will need to ensure that it is compatible first. That is because the Ryzen Threadripper launches on a totally new socket and there will not be a wide variety of coolers to choose from, at least at launch.

AMD is planning to release two Ryzen Threadripper SKUs for the retail channel. The Threadripper 1950X is the flaghip 16-core chip with simultaneous multi-threading (SMT) for 32 threads of compute power. It is clocked at 3.4GHz and boosts up to 4GHz. The chip will cost $999.

The other chip called the Threadripper 1920X will feature 12 cores and 24 threads. The chip runs at 3.5GHz base clock and 4GHz boost clock speeds. The 1920 will retail for $799.

Both chips are multiplier unlocked and pack a whopping 64 PCI-E lanes. Furthermore, they are both rated at 180 watt TDP.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper will provide a more affordable and equally fast alternative to Intel’s Core X HEDT series processors. The Team Red has already shown both Threadripper chips outperforming $999 Core i9-7900X in Cinebench R15 benchmark.

The new Threadripper chips are expected to hit the market on August 10. According to a GDM report, the chips will be available in limited quantities at launch so make sure you act fast if you’re interested in buying one.
