Core i7 7740K Kaby Lake X vs Ryzen 5 1600: SiSoft Benchmark Battle

Back in early February, we reported that Intel was prepping two Kaby Lake X processors, the Core i7 7740K and Core i5 7640K, to rival AMD’s latest Ryzen chips. Recently, one of the two, the i7 7740K, was spotted at SiSoft database compared with AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 5 1600.

The quad-core Core i7 7740K is a slightly overclocked version of the Core i7 7700K. The chip is factory overclocked at 4300MHz which is 100MHz above the core clock for the i7 7700K. The unannounced chip can hit a turbo frequency of 4.50GHz resulting in a higher TDP of 112W versus 91W on the standard model and 65W on AMD’s Ryzen 5 1600.

The i7 7740K is not just a 7700K refresh though, as the processor requires a new enthusiast LGA2066 socket, and so a new motherboard. This is why the chip uses an ASRock X299 Professional Gaming i7 motherboard in its performance in SiSoft Sandra. Another one of the most important changes from Kaby Lake S is the lack of the integrated GPU.

The Core i7 7740K fights a tough battle in the arithmetic test scoring 151.21 GOPS compared to 160.11 GOPS of the Ryzen 5 1600X. In the multi-media test, the Kaby Lake X however comes ahead with a score of 453.91 Mpix/s versus the rival’s 313.14 Mpix/s, which isn’t a surprise, given the high clock speed between the two.

In the tests, the Core i7 7740K is clocked at the 4.50GHz turbo frequency while Ryzen 5 chip is clocked at the base clock of 3.19GHz. Meaning the AMD’s chip still has an advantage here considering it could clock up to 3.60 boost clock and has two addition physical cores with four logical threads.

For comparison, the Ryzen 7 1800X tops both arithmetic and multi-media scores.

In fact, this Ryzen vs Kaby Lake battle is all about performance per thread, clock speeds and, of course, pricing. At this point, there is nothing official about the Intel Core i7 7740K, but we’re keeping tabs on it and will update you with the latest as it becomes available.
