Intel Kaby Lake Core i7 7740K and i5 7640K in works to Tackle AMD Ryzen CPUs
It seems that we have yet more in the AMD Ryzen vs Intel Kaby Lake battle as something rather interesting comes our way today. A new report from Canard PC Hardware, a reputable French PC magazine, claims that Intel is working on a slightly overclocked version of the Core i7 7700K as a response to AMD’s Ryzen CPU.

AMD Ryzen vs Intel Kaby Lake: Intel creating Higher clocked Kaby Lake CPUs
Intel’s new Kaby Lake processor will allegedly be called the Core i7 7740K. It would be factory overclocked at 4300MHz which is actually 100MHz above the standard clock for the i7 7700K.
The Kaby Lake Core i7 7740K would be rated at 100W TDP versus the 91W on the standard model. The boost frequency is still a mystery, at least at the time of writing.
It doesn’t stop there however. Reportedly, the semiconductor giant is also working on a faster i5 7600K processor, named the Core i5 7640K. This would be overclocked by 200MHz to 4GHz base frequency.
The report goes on to say that this particular CPU will feature hyper-threading which is something we don’t normally see on the i5’s. According to the source, the feature is not yet confirmed so take this hyper-threading stuff with the proverbial grain of salt.
The higher clock speeds are impressive of course, but the first thing from Intel here is sporting a higher TDP. Meaning, the chips could deal with a great amount of voltage and high heat generation allowing them to potentially overclock higher than a standard part.
However, it’s important to remember that when it comes to raw number of cores, Ryzen will still have an edge. So this whole AMD vs Intel battle comes down to performance per thread, clock speeds and of course pricing.
Ryzen CPU Lineup Leaked; Intel worried about Zen based SKUs?
A previous leak has supposedly showed the full Ryzen CPU lineup. According to the leak, Ryzen processors are already being detected out in the wild with their real names.
The lineup includes up to 17 models branded as R7, R5 and R3 series. The R7 branding features top-end 8 core processors which will be aimed at enthusiast PC builders. The R5 and R3 will be more priced optimized CPUs and will indicate 6 and 4 core variants respectively.
AMD had already confirmed that all Zen processors will feature an unlocked multiplier, but the leak reveals that each series would include an “X” model as well. So the chances are these could be elusive models which are tuned to offer better overclocking potential.
Moving back to the original report about higher clocked Kaby Lake CPUs, it seems that someone over at camp Intel is definitely concerned about Ryzen. It’s going to be very interesting to see how well AMD does against Intel’s current offerings and of course those that are being created as an attempt to respond Ryzen.
I cannot wait for Ryzen CPU to come out so we can finally see what it has in store for us. Finger’s crossed that Ryzen does well for itself and put some pressure on Intel in the CPU market which it has been dominating for a long.
